CSES Centenary Lectures: Two Wireless Ages – From Marconi's Wireless Telegraphy to the Internet of Things by Elizabeth Bruton

Speaker: Dr Elizabeth Bruton (Curator of Technology and Engineering, Science Museum, London)

This special Centenary Lecture is one of a series of talks taking place throughout 2020 to celebrate 100 years of Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society.

At the turn of the twentieth century, Guglielmo Marconi proposed a new age of wireless and long-distance communications – a global network connected seamlessly without wires. His company, the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company Limited, promoted this new and evolving technology while dealing with issues of scalability, intellectual property and patent rights, interconnectivity, and international regulations. Today, we deal with similar issues in our new wireless ages from 5G to smart devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). What can we learn from Marconi's first age of wireless over 100 years ago?
