Sandford Mill museum and waterworks tour

At last, the long-awaited return of the CSES social trips and tours!

Unless you were at the Science Discovery Day back in October 2016, have you ever had the chance to look around the water filtering plant at Sandford Mill, abandoned in 1984? Did you know, for example, that Chelmsford had the first ever "water factory" with river abstraction, chemical treatment and filtering all on one site, in a design that was copied the world over and set the standard for water treatment?

Come and learn about this, and the other (better known) industrial revolution that started in Chelmsford – Marconi and his wireless – at our exclusive members' social with Tim Wander who has recently been appointed Curator of the Sandford Mill Museum. Tim has been involved with many of our previous events, such as the Hall Street exhibition, Sandford Mill open days and Titanic Exhibition.

This is only the second time the filter house has been open to the public since the original opening in October 2016. Don't miss out!

The evening will run approximately as follows:

  • 17:00 – 17:45 Marconi tour (engine house) including 2MT hut
  • 17:45 – 18:15 Refreshments – bring your own picnic if you like!
  • 18:15 – 19:00 Filter house tour

Followed by a pub trip for those who fancy it (venue to be advised on the day).

As usual, members are welcome to bring guests. Please sign up here using the registration link above. There is plenty of parking available at the Sandford Mill site.

We do hope you will join us for what promises to be a fun and fascinating evening.
