Speaker: Colin Reynolds (Lead Systems Engineer, Leonardo)

Following the success of our well-attended New Year's Curry, we bring you February's social...

Café Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. Meetings take place in cafés, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.

This session will be an informal tour of the glass craft from an engineer's point of view, covering a wide range of techniques from stained glass windows to casting with glass. It outlines one engineer's journey of learning the craft and applying – or trying to apply – engineering principles and understanding the underlying science. The talk will introduce various glass working techniques, alluding to how a scientific or engineering approach may be of use. It will also present some of the speaker's successes, failures and unusual outcomes along the way...

And if that wasn't enough to persuade you, the union bar will be open throughout so drinks and snacks are available!
