Speaker

Our speaker will be Professor David Humber, the Provost at Anglia Ruskin University's Chelmsford Campus, who will give a talk entitled Infectious diseases I'd rather not catch again!

David spent many years researching the immunobiology of intracellular bacteria and protozoa including tuberculosis, leprosy and leishmaniasis and spent over 14 years setting up laboratories and running research projects in Kenya and Ethiopia. While over a 100 years ago we started to seriously study and find treatments we have been rather unsuccessful, particularly in sub Saharan Africa, in controlling, let alone eradicating tropical diseases. However, since the millennium, with tenfold increases in funding and with the widespread application of new technologies, are we winning or are the pathogens too clever for us?
