CSES Hosts IET Faraday Challenge 2019

CSES and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) hosted another successful Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Faraday Challenge on Wednesday 30 January 2019.

Teams of students from Hylands School, St John Payne, Chelmer Valley High School, Greensward Academy, Chelmsford County High School for Girls, The Gilberd School, Colchester Royal Grammar School, Felsted Preparatory School and King Edward VI Grammar School participated in this tough but exciting challenge.

The task was to improve on one aspect of the design, transport and launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, a large, space-based observatory that will extend the capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope when it launches in 2021.

Working within a limited range of materials and very short timescale, the teams are assessed on their planning, development, budget, product, presentation and teamwork. Teachers are not permitted to assist!

After a very close competition, Chelmer Valley High School were crowned the winners: our congratulations to them and thanks to all the schools that took part.

As ever, this challenge was very well received by the students and teachers…

"Thanks for organising such a great day yesterday, it really was so good for all the students to have such a great experience."

This teacher went on to say:

"We can't wait to get involved in another Chelmsford engineering society event."

Some more positive feedback:

"Thanks for a great day yesterday – we really enjoyed it!"

Our thanks to the IET for their excellent facilitation, and to ARU for providing the venue and catering.
